"Lessons from Life" Vyacheslav Shchelokov

I just uploaded the 500th image to my online Women in the Act of Painting project. I am amazed at how fast this point has been reached. The project is in three Facebook albums for the moment, but a blog and a book are in the works. The response to the project has been overwhelming, and I am grateful for all the comments, encouragement and contributions of images. I have learned so much, and plenty more "life lessons" to come! Thank you everybody, I really couldn't have done it without you!

I am two days away from deadline on my next article and suddenly realized I never mentioned my previous piece which came out a couple of months ago! I interviewed the painter Sarah Lamb for a piece which came out in the July/August issue of Fine Art Connoisseur magazine. I have long admired her work and had her in my far sights, and then the opportunity arose and I grabbed it! Lucky me, Sarah was a joy to interview. She currently has an exhibition at Connecticut's New Britain Museum of Contemporary Art and I am looking forward to her show at Spanierman Gallery which opens in November.

March 15 was Career Day at Harriton High School. I was honored to be asked to speak to students interested in art careers. My co-presenter was Sandy Edelstein, a vivacious and talented photographer I have long wanted to meet in person. It was great to connect. She's a pistol! We were told to expect 5-15 students per session but we had between 30 and 40 at each session instead. The perennial popularity of the arts!

A new magazine article

I was very consumed with this writing project a short while ago. I'd gotten the idea to poll artists on what their favorite art books were, and what an enormous outpouring of ideas I received! I ended up limiting the field to thirty people, and even then, it was a huge effort to be brief despite the fact that my editor gave me four pages! This turned out to be a topic that really got people thinking. The piece is just out, in the most current issue of Fine Art Connoisseur magazine, April 2011. It's been a long time since I won a prize! I've gotten honors, been awarded grants and been invited to speak and asked to act as a judge, also honors, but it has been years since I was awarded a good old-fashioned prize! I was especially tickled that the prize was awarded not by an art world-er but by a famous pastry chef: Patrick Gauthron, formerly of Le Bec Fin, and now of Aux Petits Delices. Ironically, the pastry in the painting, a traditional confection called an opera, came from one of his competitors, our local french bakery, Le Petit Mitron. I highly recommend having a local french bakery, preferably within walking distance if you can manage it! ;-)

The show is a lot of fun to view if you're in the area!

I was thrilled to find that one of my paintings was posted Monday on the excellent Women Painting Women blog. This blog went viral shortly after its inception...it's such a brilliant idea! In fact the blog even inspired a recent gallery exhibition, a very well-received much written-about exhibition, at the Robert Lange Studios Gallery in Charelston, SC.

I have several small pieces in this show that includes many of Philadelphia's finest representational artists like Renee Foulks, Daniel Miller, Carolyn Pyfrom and Peter van Dyck. Both of Artists' House receptions are always wonderful, but I prefer the Sunday one (live classical guitar, coffee and cake) so that's the one I will be attending: if you are planning to come then be sure and let me know!

I do a lot of photography in addition to painting. I don't consider myself a professional, even though I have had several photographs bought for book-covers, magazines and websites, and I am occasionally commissioned to take product shots, art shots and head shots. But I still think of it more as a hobby. I don't really know what I am doing, technically. Photography simply satisfies my unflagging impulse for observation and appreciation of this world and self-expression, and in a quick-n-easy way too! I can't be painting 24/7 but I do have a camera to hand at all moments. You never know when something will reach out and grab your heart. When that happens I reach out and grab my camera. As Baudelaire put it:
To glorify the cult of images (my great, my only, my earliest passion)

This is the first time I've exhibited my photography in a gallery setting. On October 28, Philly Photo Day, photographers took their best shot within the Philadelphia city limits and sent it in to the Philadelphia Photo Art Center. The work was catalogued, compiled and printed out on huge banners and hung.

"Leaf Blow on Clearfield Street" (click image to enlarge.) On Philly Photo Day I happened to be driving through the East Falls section of the city when a sudden gust of wind whipped the leaves into a hail of gold. I checked behind me, saw there was nobody coming up and quickly shot the scene. Talk about driving while distracted (just kidding, I of course, stopped the car while shooting.) Steering wheels make good tripods! Rotopods? :-) Prints can be ordered through the PPAC: $10 for a 5 x 7, $20 for an 8.5 x 11. If you're interested in purchasing a copy of "Leaf Blow" contact the PPAC and tell them you want image number 168.

Tomorrow, Sunday, September 26th the Dear Fleisher Exhibition and Sale will be held from 1:00 to 5:00 PM . I donated one 4 x 6 painting to that, as well. I personally feel a debt of gratitude to Fleisher for reasons I won't go into right now, and they are a wonderful part of the Philadelphia community, offering free or low-cost art classes to all comers. So I was very happy to have this chance to show my thanks.

The preview was a fun party! Susan Dineen created gorgeous blue and orange signature drinks she calls Picassos (wish Id thought to take a picture!) and a merry time was had by all.

Art Book Review

I recently had the pleasure of reviewing The Landscapes, by Richard Schmid. A large book, comprised of over 300 reproductions interspersed with Mr.Schmid's commentary and trenchant observations. This is not a How-To book, but rather a retrospective of a lifetime of landscape painting work. Mr. Schmid has two more books in this series planned, one of still life and one of figures and portraits.
My review is entitled A Life in Landscape and is in the current issue of Fine Art Connoisseur, July August 2010.

Enjoy a pleasurable day of plein air (outdoor) landscape painting with me, artist and teacher Nancy Bea Miller, on a beautiful, historic farm hidden away on the edge of the city. Fiorella Farm is a working 3.5-acre organic farm, part of a larger protected land trust, near the Schuylkill Valley Nature Center in the Andorra section of Philadelphia. $125 for the day includes light breakfast, sit-down lunch prepared by chef/farmer Pat Fiorella featuring food grown on the farm, and end-of-day drinks and nibbles.

The day will begin with coffee and muffins and a guided tour of the historic farm and property. For those new to landscape painting, I will present a detailed demo on how to get started and what to aim for. Paint until the lunch hour when participants will be invited to partake of a multi-course gourmet meal in the farmhouse. Painting will continue through the afternoon, with individual instruction on an as-needed basis. This day will end with a convivial group critique/discussion accompanied by drinks and delicious snacks.

We will compare and evaluate a variety of reference photographs and discuss the pros and cons of different lighting. We will also have time for hands-on experimentation as we practice taking our own photographic references. Participants are encouraged to bring a digital camera with cable attachment or card-reader laptop computer.

Alexandra Tyng and I were invited to judge the Parkland Art Association's Annual Juried Show, at the Allentown Art Museum. Judging is difficult but interesting work! Just FYI, the AAM is a beautiful small museum, with some very fine pieces in its collections.

Plein Air at Beaver Farm exhibit

Last Tuesday, November 3rd the Plein Air at Beaver Farm exhibit took place to benefit Camphill Special School. I am still coming down from the rush of organizing this event, staging it and experiencing it. It was simply incredible. Held at Rosenfeld Gallery in Philadelphia, the attendance was more than twice than anticipated; we ran out of wine three times and half the work was sold in two and a half hours. I'm still a bit knocked back by all this, and very grateful to the many people who helped make this such a big success! A Tale of Two Art Books
I was surprised and delighted to find that the magazine kept my somewhat facetious working title as the print title for this review! Had I been really following the Dickens formula I would have begun the review with "It was the best of books, it was the worst of books..." but in fact both books are wonderful! Very different from each other, but each is excellent in its own way. Classical Painting Atelier by Juliette Aristides and Alla Prima by Al Gury

Plein Air at Beaver Farm!

The Big Day
was a very big day indeed! On August 8th, 34 artists converged on Beaver Farm in Phoenixville PA for a wonderful day of painting, delicious food and camaraderie. The weather gods cooperated and we had a lovely day. Joyful reunions were happening all over the place as old friends saw one another again, and many new friends met for the first time, too.

Of course the main attraction was art-making. This working biodynamic farm is a place of such quiet but intense beauty many of the artists felt almost overwhelmed by choices. However this is a nice problem to have, and everyone got to work:

In case I have not mentioned it, Plein Air at Beaver Farm is an outdoor painting event I'm organizing to benefit Henry's school: Camphill Special School at Beaver Run. Consider the Lobster
The gWatson Gallery is presenting a group exhibition of new paintings entitled Consider the Lobster. Twenty-three artists, most of whom regularly exhibit in the Gallery, have created images inspired by Maine’s iconic crustacean.
The paintings range from the photo realism of Mark Workman to the abstractions of Robin Reynolds and Hannah Bureau. Pamela Parsons and Nancy Morgan Barnes contribute pictures of lobsters in their environment. Nancy Bea Miller and Alexandra Tyng prepare their lobsters on a plate. To the table, Joel Janowitz delivers six montotypes; and Jon Imber brings three small paintings. The exhibition celebrates the creativity of these twenty-three artists and salutes the men and women who sustain the area’s most important industry: lobster fishing. ~Stonington Galleries News

Consider the Lobster opens on Friday, June 26. A Celebration of artists and their lobster images will take place on Friday, July 3 from 4 to 7 PM.

Figure in the Landscape
all levels
Tuesdays, 10 am to 1 pm.
Starts May 5, goes for six weeks.
$145

One of my painting students offered me the use of her wonderful farm in Berwyn, PA: outbuildings, spring house, creek, woods, fields, pond, paddock with horse etc. I'll have a model available for those who care to pursue that aesthetic line, but people can paint whatever they want! There is a barn in which to paint the model on any rainy days, and also covered porches and loggias for the sun sensitive, and best of all for women landscape painters: access to bathrooms!
