City Hall Show!

I'm happy to announce I am included in Without the Wall, a group show curated by Treacy Ziegler. This show will be on display on the second floor of Philadelphia City Hall, right outside the Mayor's offices. The opening is Wednesday June 25, 5-7 pm. Can you guess which piece is mine in this photo? :-)

Ziegler invited a number of  professional artists to create artwork which she then paired with artwork made by her students who are inmates in a New York prison. “Ziegler’s curatorial play further blurs the line between professional and self-taught art,” says Helen Haynes, the City’s new Chief Cultural Officer. “But what she’s also doing in her comparisons, whether it’s her intention or not, is to allow us to recognize through the prism of art - within the darkest of settings such as a prison - there can be an uplifting display of human potential.” You can read more about the show by clicking here.

PAFA's 113th Annual Student Exhibition

On May 9th I received my MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. As part of my graduate requirements I had to write a thesis and also hang a 21 foot long wall in the museum with a mini show or sampling of my current work. That display of work is part of this show:

113th Annual Student Exhibition
May 9 - June 1, 2014
Preview Party: May 8, 4 - 8:30 p.m.
Public Opening: May 9, 5 - 8 p.m.

The Annual Student Exhibition (ASE) has been a tradition for over a century and is the culminating event in PAFA’s artistic calendar. Each spring the graduating students of the Certificate, BFA and Master's programs mount an exhibition that fills the Museum exhibition galleries in the Samuel M. V. Hamilton Building. Over 11,000 visitors see more than a thousand works in all media. Sales at last year’s ASE grossed over $270,000. Graduating students compete for dozens of distinguished prizes and awards, including the illustrious Cresson Traveling Fellowship and the Caldwell Purchase Prize, in which a work by a graduating student is selected for purchase by the Museum and inclusion in PAFA’s permanent collection.

Click here to view an image gallery featuring a selection of works by students participating in this year’s exhibition.

Click here to view a sampling of my particular work in this exhibition.
On opening night we had to stand by our "walls" ready to discuss our work and greet patrons. Many friends and family members came by to show support. To view my informal photo album from that night click here.
PAFA, Broad and Cherry Streets, Philadelphia, PA, USA
The show is up through June 1, 2014. For museum hours and directions click here.

Rosenfeld Gallery Show

I will have work in this exhibition: ART, ALIBI, AND AN ANONYMOUS WE
Curated by Treacy Ziegler

March 9-30, 2014, Opening Reception, March 9 12 to 5:30.p.m.
Talk: March 13, Thursday, 5:30p.m.
Rosenfeld Gallery, 113 Arch Street Philadelphia, PA 19106

This exhibition is the work of approximately 50 artists. Half of the participating artists exhibit their art in the free world. The other half of the exhibition’s participants consists of artists living in prisons; most who live in solitary confinement or on death row. If these artists get the opportunity to exhibit their work it is within the confines of “prisoner art.”

Each artist was asked to create a work of art within a 6” circle. Space restrictions of the 6” circle become the theme of the work. The presentation of all work is anonymous asking the viewer if this art or any art can be experienced without the story of the artist.

In the case of prison art, the viewer most often sees the art of the prisoner through the lens of rehabilitation instead of the lens of art.

Ultimately, art asks that the viewer forget the artist in order to experience the art as an aesthetic experience. Can this happen with prison art?

For more information on the exhibition visit An Open Window Project.

Two new magazine articles..part 2

I have two articles in the current issue of Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine! By chance, they are running back to back. The first is an exhibition preview which you can find in the previous post, and the second is a comprehensive guide to Philadelphia as an art destination.  Philadelphia: Art Mecca of the Mid-Atlantic Pages 103-107, Fine Art Connoisseur, October 2013.

Philadelphia is the U.S.A's eighth largest city and it is also well-known for its vibrant art scene, so this was a huge undertaking, but it was also a lot of fun doing the research. Many thanks to everyone who responded to my public and private cries for help requests for suggestions! I could not have done it without you. Many people responded to my Facebook queries and emails asking for information, and I am grateful to everyone. In particular I want to thank Margaret Hughes, Cara Schneider, Martha Kent Martin and Dr. Kevin Richards whose timely suggestions were immensely helpful.

NOTE: People's screen sizes and browser capabilities vary, so to read the pages it may be necessary to drag them to your desktop and then open them in Photoshop or Preview. Of course, the best way to read the article and see the full glory of the six spectacular color reproductions is to buy a copy of the magazine!

The Last Picture Show

In front of my three paintings in this last Artists' House exhibition, July 2013

This month brings the final exhibition at Artists' House Gallery. The directors, Lorraine and Marv Riesenbach are retiring after twenty-two wonderful and successful years. I have been with this fine gallery since it began, a stroke of luck for which I am immensely grateful.  How did it come about? It was my good fortune to meet Lorraine when we were both studying in the certificate program at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Lorraine is one of the most wonderful people anyone could ever happen to meet, and we became good friends. When I got married a few months after graduation Lorraine supported me through the ceremony as one of my bridesmaids. Within the year,  she and Marv started Artists' House Gallery and I was honored to be part of the original Artists' House gang.  I know how lucky I was, and I still feel honored today...nobody could ask for a better gallery than Artists' House or a better friend than Lorraine Riesenbach. Thank you Artists' House folks, Lorraine, Marv, Leigh and Rita, a million times over for all that this wonderful gallery has done for me personally and also, more importantly, for the arts community at large! ~♡♡♡~

My Latest Article: Susan Hagen

My latest article for Fine Art Connoisseur magazine just came out! It's a four page spread on Philadelphia wood carver Susan Hagen.  Click on the individual photos, then drag to your desktop to bring them up to readable size (or just go out and buy the issue!)

I have been following Susan's career with great interest ever since we met about a dozen years ago. We had both been selected as participants in a program generously sponsored by the Main Line Art Center to assist local emerging artists in their career trajectory by connecting them with a nationally-known art critic, and I guess, also each other. It was an intriguing concept.  It was a selective program and I was honored to be chosen, and did very much enjoy talking at length with the art critic, Gerrit Henry, but unfortunately he died unexpectedly about six months after this endeavor, which was extremely sad and also pretty much stymied what was probably one of the art center's main goals for the project. But it was indeed beneficial to meet a bunch of other artists at a similar stage in their careers and see their work.  Susan's aesthetic spoke to me very strongly, so it's been a real pleasure to have this opportunity to interview her and examine her work more in depth.

Susan's show at The Center for Art in Wood  entitled "Social Studies" runs through July 20. Go take a look!

Both of Artists' House receptions are always wonderful, but I prefer the Sunday one (live classical guitar, coffee and cake) so that's the one I will be attending: if you are planning to come then be sure and let me know!

I do a lot of photography in addition to painting. I don't consider myself a professional, even though I have had several photographs bought for book-covers, magazines and websites, and I am occasionally commissioned to take product shots, art shots and head shots. But I still think of it more as a hobby. I don't really know what I am doing, technically. Photography simply satisfies my unflagging impulse for observation and appreciation of this world and self-expression, and in a quick-n-easy way too! I can't be painting 24/7 but I do have a camera to hand at all moments. You never know when something will reach out and grab your heart. When that happens I reach out and grab my camera. As Baudelaire put it:
To glorify the cult of images (my great, my only, my earliest passion)

This is the first time I've exhibited my photography in a gallery setting. On October 28, Philly Photo Day, photographers took their best shot within the Philadelphia city limits and sent it in to the Philadelphia Photo Art Center. The work was catalogued, compiled and printed out on huge banners and hung.

"Leaf Blow on Clearfield Street" (click image to enlarge.) On Philly Photo Day I happened to be driving through the East Falls section of the city when a sudden gust of wind whipped the leaves into a hail of gold. I checked behind me, saw there was nobody coming up and quickly shot the scene. Talk about driving while distracted (just kidding, I of course, stopped the car while shooting.) Steering wheels make good tripods! Rotopods? :-) Prints can be ordered through the PPAC: $10 for a 5 x 7, $20 for an 8.5 x 11. If you're interested in purchasing a copy of "Leaf Blow" contact the PPAC and tell them you want image number 168.

It is truly an amazingly interesting show, giving a wildly varied portrait of a single day. It should interest Philadelphia historians and sociologists as well as artists and anyone who just loves Philadelphia!
