New magazine article

An article I wrote has just come out in the June 2017 issue of Fine Art Connoisseur magazine. Pages 50-55 (it's actually the centerfold...woo hoo!) My piece explores and discusses the newest work of artist Alexandra Tyng (which will be on view exhibition at Dowling Walsh Gallery, opening June 2, through June 25th.)

Hope you get a chance to read it!

Article - "We Speak"

Just out: my article in Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine on the "We Speak" show currently at the Woodmere Art Museum. Take a look if you can get hold of one. The reproductions are so beautiful. And go see this show if you're in the Philadelphia area. It's truly amazing, humbling, and inspiring!

Two new magazine articles..part 2

I have two articles in the current issue of Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine! By chance, they are running back to back. The first is an exhibition preview which you can find in the previous post, and the second is a comprehensive guide to Philadelphia as an art destination.  Philadelphia: Art Mecca of the Mid-Atlantic Pages 103-107, Fine Art Connoisseur, October 2013.

Philadelphia is the U.S.A's eighth largest city and it is also well-known for its vibrant art scene, so this was a huge undertaking, but it was also a lot of fun doing the research. Many thanks to everyone who responded to my public and private cries for help requests for suggestions! I could not have done it without you. Many people responded to my Facebook queries and emails asking for information, and I am grateful to everyone. In particular I want to thank Margaret Hughes, Cara Schneider, Martha Kent Martin and Dr. Kevin Richards whose timely suggestions were immensely helpful.

NOTE: People's screen sizes and browser capabilities vary, so to read the pages it may be necessary to drag them to your desktop and then open them in Photoshop or Preview. Of course, the best way to read the article and see the full glory of the six spectacular color reproductions is to buy a copy of the magazine!

Two new magazine articles..part 1

I have two articles in the current issue of Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine! By chance, they are running back to back. The first is an exhibition preview of a show that's about to open soon, Women Painting Women: (R)evolution.   Pages 98-102, Fine Art Connoisseur, October 2013.

People's screen sizes and browser capabilities vary, so to read the pages it may be necessary to drag them to your desktop and then open them in Photoshop or Preview. Of course, the best way to read the review and see the full glory of the twelve glorious color reproductions is to buy a copy of the magazine! I also suggest heading to Principle Gallery to see the show, which looks pretty amazing! Here's the information:

My Latest Article: Susan Hagen

My latest article for Fine Art Connoisseur magazine just came out! It's a four page spread on Philadelphia wood carver Susan Hagen.  Click on the individual photos, then drag to your desktop to bring them up to readable size (or just go out and buy the issue!)

I have been following Susan's career with great interest ever since we met about a dozen years ago. We had both been selected as participants in a program generously sponsored by the Main Line Art Center to assist local emerging artists in their career trajectory by connecting them with a nationally-known art critic, and I guess, also each other. It was an intriguing concept.  It was a selective program and I was honored to be chosen, and did very much enjoy talking at length with the art critic, Gerrit Henry, but unfortunately he died unexpectedly about six months after this endeavor, which was extremely sad and also pretty much stymied what was probably one of the art center's main goals for the project. But it was indeed beneficial to meet a bunch of other artists at a similar stage in their careers and see their work.  Susan's aesthetic spoke to me very strongly, so it's been a real pleasure to have this opportunity to interview her and examine her work more in depth.

Susan's show at The Center for Art in Wood  entitled "Social Studies" runs through July 20. Go take a look!

Article in Fine Art Connoisseur

December 2012 (pages 55-59)
I was privileged to speak with Linda Lee Alter a few months back about her incredible collection of art by women, which she recently gifted to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.  PAFA is celebrating this enormous and important donation with an exhibition (opening tonight!) which they call The Female Gaze: women artists making their world. I was thrilled that my editor at Fine Art Connoisseur allowed me to write on this topic which is so dear to my heart and even gave the piece what looks to me something like star billing in the magazine. Five pages, right in the middle! Aaah. Of course, Ms. Alter's genius was the spirit behind it, and the art speaks for itself, but here's what I wrote:

Many thanks also to Robert Cozzolino, the senior curator at PAFA, for sharing his insights with me!

My Latest Article!

(Click to enlarge to readable size)
I am two days away from deadline on my next article and suddenly realized I never mentioned my previous piece which came out a couple of months ago! I interviewed the painter Sarah Lamb for a piece which came out in the July/August issue of Fine Art Connoisseur magazine. I have long admired her work and had her in my far sights, and then the opportunity arose and I grabbed it! Lucky me, Sarah was a joy to interview. She currently has an exhibition at Connecticut's New Britain Museum of Contemporary Art and I am looking forward to her show at Spanierman Gallery which opens in November.

Art Book Review

I recently had the pleasure of reviewing The Landscapes, by Richard Schmid. A large book, comprised of over 300 reproductions interspersed with Mr.Schmid's commentary and trenchant observations. This is not a How-To book, but rather a retrospective of a lifetime of landscape painting work. Mr. Schmid has two more books in this series planned, one of still life and one of figures and portraits.
My review is entitled A Life in Landscape and is in the current issue of Fine Art Connoisseur, July August 2010.
