Description
This class is geared for people who already have some experience making etegami or who have at least already taken Intro to Etegami. Students will be encouraged to share their favorite etegami techniques and to bring favorite etegami they may have received or created. We will discuss various styles of etegami, and try out collage, 3D, and other alternative materials. Mounting and laminating will be addressed, as well as various methods of display and presentation. Envelope making and information about International Etegami Calls will be discussed and shared. More than anything, this class will be a fun gathering for those already bitten by the etegami bug to meet other local enthusiasts and discuss the details of their beloved art form, have fun making etegami together, and hopefully learning something new along the way!

Fast Upcoming Etegami Workshop!

I will be leading an Intro to Etegami mini workshop this coming Saturday February 10, 2018, at the Main Line Art Center in Haverford, Pennsylvania. I am told it is nearly fully enrolled, but I am pretty sure we could squeeze in another person or two. If you are interested, don't delay! The more the merrier.

This is a quick, fun, three-hour introduction to the art of etegami. You can click here to read an excellent account of what one of these workshops is like, blogged by a talented artist who took the class a few years ago. People who have taken previous etegami workshops, or are already etegami adepts, are also welcome to attend, but may be more interested in taking next month's short workshop, Continuing with Etegami, which will be held on March 17th.

PAFA Etegami Workshop

On December 2, 2017  I was happy to lead an Etegami Workshop through the continuing education department at PAFA, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. I was very lucky to get a great group of students and we had a lot of fun and made a lot of excellent etegami. People learned to carve their own hanko (signature stamps) as well. A great day and a pleasure to be back at PAFA!

This studio space was absolutely perfect for group etegami.

A small sampling of some of the beautiful work from the workshop.

Etegami is a kind of Japanese-inspired folk art that combines ink and watercolor paintings with words, on postcards. They are meant to be sent but can be cherished as a visual diary as well. The motto of Etegami is "Clumsy is fine. It is good to be clumsy." making it a fun way even for people with no art-making experience to find success and have fun. Additionally, it's a refreshing art excursion for accomplished artists as well. Truly, the art of Etegami meets you wherever you are!

Interest in Etegami is growing, world-wide and there are numerous international shows and clubs to enter and join, if the Etegami bug bites deep! For a great illustrated intro to etegami read this article: https://beyond-calligraphy.com/2017/01/10/introduction-art-etegami/

Materials needed for etegami are simple and few. If you have any watercolor supplies, even left over from childhood, and a Sharpie marker or two, then you're all set. If you have a bottle of waterproof ink too, that's a plus, but I have lots of ink and other equipment to share. Every level of experience is welcome in this fun, relaxing and energizing class!

With an etegami inspired by Dragon Fruit and Ursula K. LeGuin.

If you'd like a student's perspective on what happens in a typical etegami workshop a recent student surprised me by writing a nice long blog-post about our class! Here it is:http://andria-drawingnear.blogspot.com/2016/09/etegami-japanese-mail-art.html
