"The Philadelphia Plein Air Painters is a group of students and alumni from the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, who have come together through their love of chasing light and painting on location in the outdoors. Although each artist has his or her own individual voice and painting style, the group’s work as a whole shares a common passion for careful observation of color and light, as well as the academic painting tradition.

Judge Nancy

Being a judge is exacting work but I have to admit I kind of relish the challenge. I must do an okay job at it as I keep on getting asked to judge various art events/exhibitions. Either that or else people just can't find anyone else willing to take the heat, er, take on the task! :-D The latest judge gig was last month, when I was asked to judge the end of year art exhibition at PennWood High School. Talk about hard work for the person with the clipboard...so much talent and so few prizes available to give! What's a judge to do? Double the honorable mention list of course! ;-)

I've been in innumerable art exhibitions and other situations where my work has been judged and so I understand how it feels. Sometimes it can really burn, sometimes it's an unexpected delight. I have a lot of compassion for the situation. People's dreams and joys are so trustingly put up for all to see. I hope people realize that the judgment is just one person's opinion on one day, and not a decree from on high guiding the course of the artist's future career for all time!

Despite any judge's best efforts there is a certain amount of random chance involved: from whose work is next to yours, how it is lit, what order your work is seen in, time of day and the judge's personal tastes (no matter how hard she or he strives for open mindedness!) I always go through a show of work multiple times and in different directions, jotting down notes before I even begin to think about making a selection. But a different judge on a different day might pick an all different roster of winners!

PAFA's 113th Annual Student Exhibition

On May 9th I received my MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. As part of my graduate requirements I had to write a thesis and also hang a 21 foot long wall in the museum with a mini show or sampling of my current work. That display of work is part of this show:

The Annual Student Exhibition (ASE) has been a tradition for over a century and is the culminating event in PAFA’s artistic calendar. Each spring the graduating students of the Certificate, BFA and Master's programs mount an exhibition that fills the Museum exhibition galleries in the Samuel M. V. Hamilton Building. Over 11,000 visitors see more than a thousand works in all media. Sales at last year’s ASE grossed over $270,000. Graduating students compete for dozens of distinguished prizes and awards, including the illustrious Cresson Traveling Fellowship and the Caldwell Purchase Prize, in which a work by a graduating student is selected for purchase by the Museum and inclusion in PAFA’s permanent collection.

Amber at the Philadelphia Flower Show!

I am thrilled to announce that my painting "Amber, Dreaming" is on display at the Philadelphia Flower Show. The piece is part of a venture to showcase the work of local art school students in this year's flower show. This year's show theme is "ARTiculture" and I was very honored that the PFS committee chose my piece.  16 PAFA students were selected in all and our pieces will be rotated: Amber is in the current grouping dates to view Friday 2/28 through 3/3.

n.b. Because of some family issues which took me out of state, I was not able to get in to see it hanging in person! Many many thanks to Cara Schmidt who stumbled upon it at the show and was intrigued enough to read the label and then realize her friend had painted it...what a lucky happenstance! She snapped a shot and posted it too so I got to see it in situ...you're so great Cara ♡  And huge thanks also to my lovely model, Amber, for allowing me to paint her and then show the piece! ♡♡  Here's the show photo:

The Last Picture Show

This month brings the final exhibition at Artists' House Gallery. The directors, Lorraine and Marv Riesenbach are retiring after twenty-two wonderful and successful years. I have been with this fine gallery since it began, a stroke of luck for which I am immensely grateful.  How did it come about? It was my good fortune to meet Lorraine when we were both studying in the certificate program at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Lorraine is one of the most wonderful people anyone could ever happen to meet, and we became good friends. When I got married a few months after graduation Lorraine supported me through the ceremony as one of my bridesmaids. Within the year,  she and Marv started Artists' House Gallery and I was honored to be part of the original Artists' House gang.  I know how lucky I was, and I still feel honored today...nobody could ask for a better gallery than Artists' House or a better friend than Lorraine Riesenbach. Thank you Artists' House folks, Lorraine, Marv, Leigh and Rita, a million times over for all that this wonderful gallery has done for me personally and also, more importantly, for the arts community at large! ~♡♡♡~

I'm in my usual last minute mode of getting paintings ready to deliver to a show which opens next weekend. I took a piece outside to spray varnish, when I went out to bring it back in I found my cat sitting by it and purring lovingly...thanks dear little Sunny! Sometimes it's nice to get even just one purr of approval...♡

(Of course, maybe he was just getting high off the varnish fumes...LOL!)

I was privileged to speak with Linda Lee Alter a few months back about her incredible collection of art by women, which she recently gifted to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.  PAFA is celebrating this enormous and important donation with an exhibition (opening tonight!) which they call The Female Gaze: women artists making their world. I was thrilled that my editor at Fine Art Connoisseur allowed me to write on this topic which is so dear to my heart and even gave the piece what looks to me something like ☆star billing☆ in the magazine. Five pages, right in the middle! Aaah. Of course, Ms. Alter's genius was the spirit behind it, and the art speaks for itself, but here's what I wrote:

Surprised by a Prize!

It's been a long time since I won a prize! I've gotten honors, been awarded grants and been invited to speak and asked to act as a judge, also honors, but it has been years since I was awarded a good old-fashioned prize!  I was especially tickled that the prize was awarded not by an art world-er but by a famous pastry chef: Patrick Gauthron, formerly of Le Bec Fin, and now of Aux Petits Delices. Ironically, the pastry in the painting, a traditional confection called an opera, came from one of his competitors, our local french bakery, Le Petit Mitron. I highly recommend having a local french bakery, preferably within walking distance if you can manage it! ;-)

The show is a lot of fun to view if you're in the area!

I am in a small works show that opens today at Artists' House Gallery in Old City Philadelphia.  I have several small pieces in this show that includes many of Philadelphia's finest representational artists like Renee Foulks, Daniel Miller, Carolyn Pyfrom and Peter van Dyck. Both of Artists' House receptions are always wonderful, but I prefer the Sunday one (live classical guitar, coffee and cake) so that's the one I will be attending: if you are planning to come then be sure and let me know!
